Getting to Poděbrady...

...from the airport

If you are travelling to Prague via airplane, the best way to get from the Václav Havel Airport to the main train station is firstly by bus 59, leaving right across the street from the arrivals hall. You don’t need to worry about time, as it leaves every few minutes. You will get off at the Nádraží Veleslavín station and descend to the underground station. From there you will take the line A (green) in the direction of Depo Hostivař and you will get off at the Muzeum station. There you will transfer to the line C (red), get on in the direction of Letňany and get off at the Hlavní nádraží station.

Getting around Prague

As for the public transport tickets, it is easiest to buy them through the PID Lítačka (Prague Integrated Transport) app. If you do, do not forget to activate the ticket. However, you can also buy them at the airport bus stop and at the entrance to the underground stops. If you do buy them in physical form, do not forget to validate them in yellow boxes present either in the vehicle (bus, trams) or at the entrance to the station (underground). The tickets in physical form are 3 (2 if you buy the student ticket) czech crowns more expensive than the tickets bought in the PID Lítačka app.

From Prague to Poděbrady

Direct trains are going to Poděbrady from Praha hlavní nádraží (Prague main train station) once every approximately 30 minutes. The quickest trains are either R Krakonoš or R Hradečan. With these it takes 46 minutes and one of these leaves every hour around quarter past.

From Brno

From Brno, the easiest route to take is from Brno hlavní nádraží (Brno main train station) to Kolín and then transferring to a train from Kolín to Poděbrady. There are many trains that you can take, for example R Vysočina (transfering to R RegioJet/RJET) or R Svitava (transfering to a local train). One of these leaves approximately every half an hour, but there are more trains leaving in between.

Highlights in Prague

If you have a few days to spare and want to spend them exploring the capital of Czech Republic, we prepared a few tips from a local for you.

Of course, when travelling to a new city, you want to start with the dominants. The Prague castle with its St. Vitus Cathedral is a great place to start. Then you can descend to the Lesser Town Square and cross the Vltava river via the famous Charles bridge. You will find yourself in the Old Town and can continue to the Old Town Square where you can find the historical Astronomical clock. From there you can continue to Wenceslas Square, where the National Museum is showing off its beauty at the very top of the square. If you still have time left, you can take a very nice walk through National Avenue, which takes you to both the new and the historical building of the National Theatre.

If you have more time, the best way to explore the city is to just wander through the city centre or along the river shores. Many universities are standing in the city centre and a lot of beautiful architecture is at every corner to see. During December a lot of Christmas markets will be happening around the city. If you want to get into the Christmas spirit already or just want to get warmed up by hot chocolate, do not hesitate to check them out.

And now to the tips from a local. If you want to rest a bit in a park, Letenské pláně is the place to do so. It offers a stunning view of the city and a lot of space to walk or sit around. It is a little further away from the centre, but it is sure worth it. If you don’t have the time to go there, then there is another amazing spot right in the city centre. Střelecký ostrov is located on the Vltava river right next to the National Theatre and offers views on both of the river’s shores. You can walk around the island or just sit down and take in the view. And as a bonus, you have a very high chance of seeing coypus here.
