Getting to Liberec

From Praha…

...where you got by plane.

The quickest and cheapest way to get to Liberec for you is with RegioJet from the Praha - Černý Most Bus Station. You can get to Liberec by train as well, but it takes more time, can be more expensive, and requires more transfers, so we would advise you against this.

The bus connection can be bought online on the RegioJet website. The ride takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the ticket can be bought for as little as 5 EUR with enough notice.

To get to the Praha - Černý Most Bus Station, you will need to take either the metro line B (yellow line) directly to Černý Most or an Uber or taxi, but we generally advise against this option as it is about ten times more expensive than 30 minutes of public transport, as well as being considered non-sustainable, which partially goes against the goals of this session. If you decide on the first option, you should buy the 30-minute ticket for 30 Czech Koruna. For more on Praha’s public transport, check out the “Getting around Praha” section.

...where you got by train

It's great that you got to travel by train so much! We're a bit jealous. If you arrived at Praha hlavní nádraží (Praha main train station) or Praha - Smíchov, you can catch this train to Liberec:

If you didn't arrive at Praha hlavní nádraží or Praha - Smíchov, take any train that will get you to one of these stations. You can check the train schedules on this website.

For travel within the city, standard public transport fares apply. For more details on fares, see the “Getting around Praha” section.

You can use the ticket kiosks at each rail station or go to the České Dráhy website to buy a ticket for any train heading beyond the city.

...where you got by bus.
If you arrived in Praha by bus, you most likely got off at Praha Florenc, the main bus station. From there, take the metro line B (yellow line) directly to Praha - Černý Most. In the rare event that your bus stops at a different location, please check Google MapsIDOS, or contact our travel support organizer, Arnošt. For fare information, refer to the “Getting around Praha” chapter.

From Münich…

Traveling from Münich to Liberec is a bit more complex than traveling from Praha, but it's still more straightforward than from many other international cities. The best way to get to Liberec from Münich is by bus, as train connections are more complicated and involve multiple transfers. You can take a bus from Münich to Praha and then transfer to another bus heading to Liberec. The entire journey takes around 7-8 hours, depending on the connection.

…where you got by plane.

If you arrived at München-Flughafen by plane, you'll need to get to München-Hauptbahnhof (main train station) to catch the bus connection mentioned above. You can reach the main train station by taking either S-Bahn line 1 or 8, which takes about 45 minutes.

For tickets, purchase a “Single Adult Ticket” for 13 EUR. Tickets are available at ticket machines at U-Bahn and S-Bahn stops, online, and via the MVV or MVG app. You can also buy tickets at service points, customer service centres, info points, and many private points of sale (e.g., kiosks and stationery stores, similar to Praha).

Remember to validate your ticket before starting your journey.

As with Praha, we recommend against using an Uber or Taxi to get to the train station, as it can cost around 70 EUR. That's quite expensive!

…where you got by train.

If you arrived in Münich by train, you likely ended up at München Hbf (Hauptbahnhof). From there, you can catch a bus to Praha and then transfer to another bus heading to Liberec. No additional transportation across the city is needed. Lucky you!

…where you got by bus.

If you arrived in Münich by bus, you most likely ended up at München Hackerbrücke. From there, it's just a short walk to the main train station (München Hbf), where you can catch the bus connection mentioned above. No need for additional public transport tickets; simply take the 5-minute walk and you'll be there in no time.

    • You can board the vehicle only after receiving the SMS with the so-called HASH code and the valid time.
    • The SMS ticket is transferable and valid only in the Liberec tariff zone and only on Liberec public transport lines.
    • Show the received SMS with the HASH code to the inspector.
    • If you accidentally delete the SMS with the HASH code, you can request a duplicate SMS ticket by sending an SMS with the text: LIB to the number 9000603 (the cost of the duplicate SMS ticket is 3 CZK including VAT). You will receive the duplicate ticket on your mobile phone within 2 minutes.

Important: The SMS ticket is valid only in the Liberec tariff zone and cannot be used for travel to Jablonec nad Nisou. For more information, visit this site.

Getting around Praha

Praha's public transport system is renowned for its efficiency, ranking second in the world, just behind Berlin. Navigating the city is straightforward. You can purchase tickets for Praha's public transport from the yellow PID (Praha Integrated Transport) vending machines using cash or card, at most newsstands, or via contactless card payment inside buses or trams at the orange validation machines,

typically located near the doors on your right. Ticket options include 30 CZK for 30 minutes and 40 CZK for 90 minutes.

Ticket machines

If you purchase a ticket separately (not on the bus), you must validate it in the yellow validation machines inside the bus or tram, or before entering the metro or train.

Tickets bought directly on the bus or tram are valid from the time of purchase and do not need additional validation.

All tickets are transferable across different modes of transport, meaning a 90-minute ticket remains valid for 90 minutes regardless of whether you switch between buses, trams, or the metro, as long as you stay within the city limits.

Currency

The Czech Republic uses Czech Koruna (CZK). As of now, the conversion rate is approximately 24.56 CZK for 1 EUR, or 0.041 EUR for 1 CZK.

Cash Recommendations

Bring enough cash to cover any pre-ordered merchandise and the officials' dinner. It's advisable to have 300 to 500 CZK (12 to 20 EUR) in cash for smaller establishments that may not accept cards. Some self-service checkouts also do not accept cash, so having both cash and a credit card is recommended.

Currency Exchange

Currency exchange offices are called "směnárna". Always check reviews before using one. Here are some recommended places:

In Liberec:

  • Směnárna Exchange-Liberec: Revoluční 66/2, Liberec

  • Směnárna EUROEXCHANGE s.r.o.: Sousedská 600, Liberec

  • HS STAVOFIN s.r.o. SMĚNÁRNA: Frýdlantská 185, Liberec

In Prague:

  • eXchange: Kaprova 14/13, 110 00 Praha 1

  • Alfa Prague S.r.o.: Štefánikova 18/25, 150 00 Praha 5

  • Huspak Change: Politických vězňů 911/8, 110 00 Praha 1

Exchange Rate Tips

Ensure you are getting a fair exchange rate. Some places advertise "0 commission" but offer poor rates, potentially giving you up to 20 % less than other places.

Avoid exchanging money with random people on the street.

ATM Tips

  • Be cautious with ATMs, especially those operated by Euronet. They may offer to withdraw large amounts of money at poor exchange rates.

  • Only withdraw the amount you need and choose the "Decline conversion" option to use your bank's exchange rate, which is usually more favorable.
