Sustainable travelling

Protecting the environment is one of the values that EYP aims to spread among the young active citizens of Europe. We take into account the difficulty of travelling sustainably, quickly, and moderately cheaply from all parts of Europe to one place. Still, we highly encourage you to consider less carbon-producing means of travel such as taking a train, a bus, or one direct flight to near Ostrava. Thank you for taking this into consideration when booking your tickets.

From...

From Prague

Firstly, if you plan on flying on the way to Ostrava, we recommend you fly to the Katowice airport, instead of Prague, since it is closer to the city of Ostrava. There is an airport in Ostrava, but we don’t recommend using that one.

You can get to Ostrava from Prague by taking the bus or train. If you are taking the train, you should depart from the Praha-Hlavní nádraží station (Prague Main Train Station) and arrive at the Ostrava-Svinov station. A one-way ticket to Ostrava should cost around 369-550 CZK (15-22 EUR). The ticket prices can be significantly lowered to 250-350 CZK/10-14 EUR if you have a student discount. Make sure you have a valid ISIC or any other student card with you on the train if you bought the tickets with a discount! You can also take the bus (however, this option is more expensive and time-consuming). You can depart from many bus stations in Prague, such as Praha-Florenc or Praha-Na Knížecí, and you should arrive at Ústřední autobusové nádraží (ÚAN) Ostrava.

If you arrived in Prague by plane, you can get to the Praha Hlavní nádraží station via bus and metro. Take the 119 bus from the Terminál 1/Terminál 2 station to Nádraží Veleslavín, where you can go to the metro A (green) line. Travel to the Muzeum station, where you transfer to the metro C (red) line, Hlavní nádraží is just one station away. You can buy the bus tickets directly on the bus.

Regarding the metro tickets, you can buy them in one of the big yellow ticket machines near the bus stops or metro/tram stations. This guide can be very helpful. If you buy the metro tickets in the machines, don’t forget to validate them, by putting them in one of the smaller yellow boxes located right before the ticket compulsory area! The prices are 30 CZK for 30 minutes, but we advise you to buy the 90 minutes ticket for 40 CZK, since the journey will probably take more than 30 minutes.

From Katowice (Poland)

There are many trains to choose from that get you from Katowice to Ostrava-Svinov. Most of them cost around 12 EUR and take circa 2 hours. The buses, however, often cost only 9 EUR and take a little over an hour to get to Ostrava.

If you arrived at the Katowice airport, you can take the airport bus line AP to get to the train station. A more detailed guide can be found here.

The connections from Kraków (Kraków Główny station for trains, Kraków MDA for buses) to Ostrava are quite similar to the ones from Katowice but count with a slightly longer journey (about an hour more).

In Ostrava

When travelling by train, make sure to get off at Ostrava-Svinov, rather than Ostrava hlavní nádraží. Ostrava-Svinov is way closer to our venue and almost all trains stop there.

The check-in venue is Hotel Garni na kolejích VŠB-TUO. You can use the city’s public transport to get there. The closest public transport stops are Poruba, Studentské koleje (bus) and VŠB-TUO (tram).

    • From UÁN (CentralBus Station – Flixbus), you can travel by the tram number 8 in the Vřesinská direction from the Náměstí republiky station (which is near UÁN) and get off at the VŠB-TUO station, from where you can walk to the venue.
    • From Ostrava-Svinov (Svinov Train Station), you can:
      • Take the bus no. 37 from the Svinov, nádraží station (which is directly next to the train station) in the Poruba, Studentská direction and get off at the last stop. Thenit’s just a less than a 10 minutes walk to the venue.
      • Alternatively, you can walk to the Svinov, mosty station, and then take either 7, 8 or 17 tram in the Poruba, Vřesinská. Then, you can get off at the VŠB-TUO station and walk for 10 minutes to the venue.
    • From Ostrava hlavní nádraží (Ostrava main railway station), you can take the tram number 8 (Ostrava hlavní nádraží station, in the Vřesinská direction, you get off at the VŠB-TUO station), or bus number 54 (from the Sady B. Němcové station, in the Poruba, Studentské koleje direction, where you also get off) but the journey to the venue takes over half an hour, so we recommend you take the train to Ostrava Svinov instead.
    • You can buy the tram tickets with your credit card directly on the tram/bus, you put your card to the terminal upon getting on the vehicle. You can also buy the tickets via the MojeDPO mobile app. More info on the DPO website.
